Q1: What software does SuppleHost use?

A1: Our servers have installed many different programs and software modules. Most important are:

  • Java Virtual Machine: 1.5.0
  • Java Server: Tomcat 5.5 or Tomcat 5.0
  • Fore Server: Apache 2.0
  • Database: MySQL 4.0 (MySQL 4.1 for SupplePlatinum hosting accounts)
  • O/S: GNU/Linux 2.4 x86
  • MTA: sendmail 8.12
  • Other: PHP 4.3, Perl 5.6

For java hosting we use powerful iPIV or AMD Athlon based servers with 1 to 3 Gb RAM.

Note 1: Certain modules contain custom security and performance patches developed by SuppleHost. Such patches do not break compatibility in any way.
Note 2: Some SuppleHost servers may have installed versions newer than specified here.
Note 3: If you are an existing customer, and your account is installed with older software than specified here you have the ability to upgrade your account. Please contact us at support@supplehost.com to upgrade to newer versions of any software. According to our policy, such upgrades will done for you free of charge.

Q2: What does Private JVM mean? Why doesn't SuppleHost offer Shared JVM?

A2: Private JVM means exactly that - you are provided with a distinct JVM that is in your exclusive use. Other users do not have access to your JVM, and their bugs can not affect your web site. If you run quality web applications the the Private JVM can be run for long periods of time, providing the best performance.

On the contrary, some hosting companies offer Shared JVM. Such Shared JVM usually holds dozens if not hundreds of web sites, and if any of these web sites are not running quality web applications (consuming all JVM memory, for example) - all hosted web sites will suffer. Shared JVMs tend to possess uncollectable garbage over time; for this reason, Shared JVM is restarted regularly which seriously effects performance and causes some of your web site visitors to see error messages when restart takes place.

In order to provide you with the best service, SuppleHost provides only Private JVMs to its clients.

Q3: Will I be allowed to restart my JVM whenever I need to?

A3: Every experienced java developer knows that sometimes it is necessary to restart the JVM in order to force JSP recompilation, reload deployment descriptor, or things of that nature. You can easily restart your Private JVM using our web-based control panel.

Note: hosting providers that use Shared JVM do not provide clients with the capability to restart JVM they use at will. Safe restart is possible only for Private JVM; this is another reason why SuppleHost offers Private JVM for every account.

Q4: Can I use third-party java packages?

A4: Yes, of course! Private JVM gives you great flexibility; you can install any java packages of any version you want and when other users change their packages, rest assured your hosting account is not affected.

All web hosting accounts come with JDBC preinstalled. If you would like to have other popular packages like JavaMail preinstalled, please specify so in your web hosting service order or you can add/replace/delete packages at any time.

Q5: How much does it cost to upgrade or downgrade my hosting account?

A5: Account upgrade or downgrade is gladly done free of charge, and we hope our clients will not abuse this offer. If you change your mind and request removal of recently installed upgrade (or vice versa), we reserve the right to charge you $40 per each incident starting from the second such incident.

Q6: Can I use a domain name I register on my own?

A6: Yes of course, the majority of our clients own and maintain their own domain names. You can also transfer your web site from another web hosting company to SuppleHost.com while our free domain registration offer is completely optional.

Q7: Can I cancel my hosting account at any time?

A7: Yes. If you cancel your hosting account within the first 15 days, you will receive a full refund. After 15 days, we provide you with web hosting services as long as you pay monthly/quarterly/annual hosting bills. We do not tie you down to any sort of long-term contract; we have much better means to retain customers including: reliable hosting hardware, fast network connections, secure software configuration, low service fees and quality technical support.

Q8: How is SuppleHost's billing cycle structured?

A8: Depending on the date you ordered your web hosting account, it goes into one of the billing cycles:

  • accounts installed between the 25th and the 9th day of every month go to 1st billing cycle;
  • accounts installed between the 10th and the 24th day of every month go to 15th billing cycle.

Accounts in the 1st billing cycle are charged between the 1st and 6th day of month. Accounts in the 15th billing cycle are charged between the 15th and 20th day of month. If automatic charges fails, we send a hosting bill that should be paid within 2 weeks of receipt to avoid service interruption.

Q9: Can I go over the monthly traffic provided with the hosting account?

A9: Yes you can as we do not set limits on traffic usage. Any over usage of network traffic will be billed at the next billing cycle according to the rates given at the Account Addons Page.

Q10: Can I go over the disk space limit provided with the hosting account?

A10: Generally, no. The operation system will not allow you create new files or extend existing ones after you have reached your hard disk space quota (which is somewhat higher than the disk space limit mentioned in the hosting plan description, allowing you to temporarily go over hosting account limit if needed). If you need more disk space, please contact us and order disk space add-on.

Q11: How is disk space limit split between files and database?

A11: It is up to you to decide. You may use 0.1% of disk space for files and 99.9% for database, or you may use 99.9% for files and 0.1% for database. We simply add disk space occupied by files to disk space occupied by database, and use the sum towards billing purposes.

Q12: Can my web application send automatically generated emails?

A12: Yes, we provide you with access to SMTP server that runs on each of our hosting servers. Moreover, all java enabled accounts have the popular JavaMail package preinstalled. Feel free to email your web site visitors confirmations of their actions (like opening an account, submitting an entry, etc.), requested postings (like certain resources becoming available, certain events happenings, etc.), newsletter that users voluntary subscribe to, and other postings that benefit you and your users as long as your users don't mind to receive them. But please note: we have zero tolerance for SPAM.

Q13: How are your backups performed?

A13: We understand that backups are among the most important services in the hosting industry. We provide every shared hosting account with realtime database replication, and frequent file backup. Replication and backup occur over secure channel to a remote server that is hundreds of miles away. The backup server in turn, periodically writes backups to external backup media thus, even if the hosting server or entire datacenter is destroyed by a disaster we have all the backups and are able to get your web site back online quickly.

Backup up is a serious topic; click here to learn more details.

Q14: Does SuppleHost filter out unsolicited emails?

A14: Yes we do. Unlike most other hosts we do not cease accepting emails from half of the internet for few days just because of several spam emails sent somewhere. While filtering emails out, our primary concern is to ensure that valid emails reach recipient(s) without losses or delays; using carefully choosen and tuned highly-effective filtering mechanisms we nonetheless successfully filter out over 95% of unsolicited traffic.

Q15: What is the SuppleHost Name Servers?

A15:

  • ns.supplehost.com
  • ns2.supplehost.com
  • ns3.supplehost.com

Q16: Where can I purchase an SSL Certificate for my web site?

A16: Click here for an affordable SSL Certificate.
